MTO Vision Testing in Hamilton, ON

If you've received a request from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) or DriveTest to have your vision assessed for your driver's licence, You & Eye Optometry on Fennell Ave E, Hamilton Mountain can help. We perform official MTO vision tests and complete the required MTO forms with prompt, convenient appointments.

What Is an MTO Vision Test?

An MTO vision test is a formal assessment of your driving vision — required by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation in specific situations. It evaluates two key areas:

Visual Acuity

How clearly you can see at distance — measured in each eye separately and both eyes together, with and without corrective lenses.

Visual Field Testing

The width of your peripheral (side) vision — Ontario requires a minimum horizontal visual field of 120 degrees for most driver's licences.

After testing, we complete the official MTO vision report form, which you submit to DriveTest or ServiceOntario as part of your licence renewal or medical review process.

Who Needs an MTO Vision Test?

  • Drivers aged 80 and over — required every two years as part of Ontario's mandatory senior driver renewal program
  • Drivers referred by DriveTest or ServiceOntario — when a vision concern is flagged during a renewal or road test
  • Drivers returning from a medical licence suspension — clearance vision testing before reinstatement
  • Commercial vehicle licence (DZ, AZ) applicants — stricter visual standards apply for commercial licences
  • Drivers whose physician or specialist has requested an optometric vision report for MTO purposes

Frequently Asked Questions

An MTO vision test is an official vision assessment required by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation for certain driver's licence renewals and medical reviews. It tests both your visual acuity (clarity of sight) and your peripheral visual field. Results are recorded on the official MTO form, which you submit to ServiceOntario or DriveTest.
MTO vision tests are most commonly required for: drivers aged 80 and over (every two years for licence renewal), drivers referred by DriveTest or ServiceOntario due to a vision concern, drivers returning from a medical licence suspension, and commercial vehicle licence applicants. If you're unsure whether you need this test, contact us and we'll help clarify.
The test typically takes 20 to 40 minutes. It includes visual acuity testing and a visual field assessment. We complete the official MTO documentation on your behalf, which you can then submit to the appropriate ministry office.
The MTO vision test is generally not covered by OHIP as a standard benefit. There is a fee for the test and form completion. Please call or text (905) 745-5507 for current pricing and to book your appointment.
For a standard Class G licence, you must be able to see 6/12 (20/40) or better with both eyes open (with corrective lenses if needed), and have a minimum horizontal visual field of 120 degrees. Commercial licence holders face stricter requirements. Contact us if you have concerns about meeting these standards.
