Children's Eye Exams in Hamilton, ON
Good vision is one of the most important factors in a child's development, learning, and quality of life. Yet many vision problems in children go undetected because kids don't know what clear vision looks like — they simply adapt to what they can see. Regular eye exams are the only reliable way to catch these issues early.
At You & Eye Optometry on Fennell Ave E, Hamilton Mountain, we provide comprehensive pediatric eye exams for children of all ages — from infants to teenagers. Our appointments are designed to be warm, fun, and stress-free.
OHIP Coverage for Children's Eye Exams
All children and youth under 20 in Ontario are entitled to one fully covered eye exam per year under OHIP. We directly bill OHIP, so there is no cost to your family for your child's annual exam.
When Should My Child Have Their First Eye Exam?
6–9 Months
First eye exam to check for refractive errors, alignment, and healthy eye development.
2–5 Years
Second exam before school starts. Detect amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes) when treatment is most effective.
School Age+
Annual exams every year. Up to 80% of classroom learning is visual — clear sight is essential for school success.
What Does a Pediatric Eye Exam Include?
Our child-friendly exams are comprehensive but comfortable. We use a variety of non-verbal and picture-based tests for young children who can't yet read, and we explain every step in a calm, friendly way. A typical pediatric exam includes:
- Visual acuity testing — how clearly your child sees at distance and near
- Binocular vision assessment — how well both eyes work together as a team
- Objective refraction — determines the glasses prescription without needing verbal responses
- Eye alignment and movement — screening for strabismus (crossed eyes) and amblyopia (lazy eye)
- Eye health evaluation — internal and external health of the eyes
- Colour vision screening — important for classroom activities and early career awareness
Warning Signs of Vision Problems in Children
Children rarely complain about poor vision — they simply adapt. Watch for these signs:
- Sitting very close to the TV or holding books very close
- Squinting or closing one eye to see clearly
- Frequent eye rubbing or blinking
- Complaints of headaches, especially after reading or screen time
- One eye turning in or out (especially noticeable in photos)
- Difficulty with reading, writing, or schoolwork despite effort
- Losing their place when reading or using a finger to track lines
