Kids Eye Exams in Hamilton — OHIP Covered Under 20
Your child's vision is the foundation of their ability to learn, play, and thrive. An estimated 1 in 4 school-age children has a vision problem — and most go undetected because children adapt to what they see and rarely complain. At You & Eye Optometry on Fennell Ave E, Hamilton Mountain, we provide comprehensive, child-friendly eye exams for kids of all ages.
Every child and youth under 20 in Ontario is entitled to a free, OHIP-covered comprehensive eye exam once per year. No cost to your family — we bill OHIP directly.
When Should My Child Have Their First Eye Exam?
6-9 Months
First exam: checks for refractive errors, eye alignment, and healthy visual development during the critical early window.
2-5 Years
Before school starts: detects amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus when treatment is most effective.
Every Year After
Annual exams from school age onward. Vision changes rapidly during childhood.
Why School Vision Screenings Are Not Enough
School screenings only check basic distance acuity — they miss many significant vision problems including eye coordination issues, focusing disorders, colour vision deficiency, and early eye disease. A comprehensive exam by an optometrist is the only reliable way to assess your child's full eye health.
Signs Your Child May Need an Eye Exam
- Sitting very close to the TV or holding books very near
- Squinting or closing one eye to see
- Frequent headaches or eye rubbing
- Difficulty reading or losing their place
- One eye turning in or out
- Struggling at school despite effort
Most children do not complain about poor vision because they have no reference for what clear vision looks like. Annual exams are the reliable safety net.
Fun and Stress-Free Appointments
We use picture-based charts, games, and objective testing that do not require verbal responses. Most kids find the experience fun and look forward to returning. For the full picture on our approach, see our pediatric eye exam page.
